Tightening the belt in the last ten days of Ramadhan

Tightening the belt in the last ten days of Ramadhan

On the authority of Aisha’ (May Allah be pleased with her) it is mentioned that she said,

Once the last ten [days of Ramadhan] started, the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) used to spend the nights in worship, wake his family, strive, and tighten his belt.”

[Bukhari and Muslim]

Explanation

Her phrase “tighten his belt” is a metaphor for his(saw) preparing himself to worship and strive hard in worship, more than usual. It has the meaning of “rolling up one’s sleeves” to worship (i.e. getting ready to make a great deal of effort).
