Purifying the heart of hatred

Purifying the heart of hatred

Allah, the most high says:

“And those who came after them say: ‘Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful.”

[Al – Qur’an 59:10]

After the emigration of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) from Makkah to Medinah, the Sahaabah were categorised into 3 groups, namely the Muhajiroon (those who emigrated), The Ansaar (the helpers, who received the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and the Muhajiroon), and thereafter those who came after, i.e. those who became believers after the Hijrah (emigration) and followed in the righteous lead and excellence of the Muhajiroon and the Ansaar.

So “And those who came after them”, refers to this third group. They pray in the words mentioned ‘Our Lord! Forgive us…’ to Allah, asking Allah not to put hatred into their hearts against those who have believed, i.e. the earlier Sahaabah, who were more favoured by Allah, due to their sacrifices.

This is a dua that we should recite often, that Allah does not place into our hearts any hatred towards any of the believers, those who have passed and those who are amongst us, as Allah favours some more than others, but this should not lead us to hate those who are more favoured.
