Being content with our provision in this world

Being content with our provision in this world

Al Hasan al-Basri (May Allah have mercy on him) reports that Umar ibn Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) wrote the following letter to Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (May Allah be pleased with him),

“Be content with your provision in this world, for the Most Merciful has honoured some of His(swt) servants over others in terms of provision as a test for both. The one who has been given plenty is being tested to see if he will give thanks to Allah and fulfil the duties which are His(swt) by virtue of his wealth.”

[Ibn Hatim]

Allah, the Most High has therefore forbidden us from desiring what others have in terms of worldly provision, “Do not wish for what we have favoured some of you over others.” [Al Qur’an 4:32]
